The CURT 56553 connects at both taillights and uses a protected powered converter. A fused battery feed powers the trailer lamps while the factory lighting circuits provide signal input.

Connector Location: The trailer connector is routed outside the vehicle and secured beside the hitch for ready access; it is not stored loose inside the cargo area.

1. Disconnecting Power and Removing the Taillights

The negative battery cable is isolated, both rear lamps are unbolted, and their factory connectors are released carefully.

2. Opening the Rear Underbody Access Area

The driver-side protective panel is removed by releasing its plastic nuts and push fasteners.

3. Connecting Both Harness Branches

The driver- and passenger-side T-connectors are installed between the factory harnesses and lamps without cutting the vehicle wiring.

4. Mounting the Converter and Routing Power

The converter is secured in a protected location and the fused battery power lead is routed safely away from heat and moving components.

5. Positioning the 4-Flat and Testing

The 4-flat is placed neatly at the hitch, every lighting function is verified, and all taillights and protective panels are restored.
