2017–2018 Jeep Wrangler JK Hitch Installation

Receiver: 2-inch Class 3
Fitment: 2017–2018 Wrangler JK
Published hitch rating: Up to 5,000 lb trailer / 500 lb tongue
Installation includes: Crossmember inspection, exhaust support when needed, controlled hole alignment, application-specific hardware, torque verification, reassembly, and final clearance inspection
Important: The Wrangler’s vehicle-specific towing limit may be lower and always takes precedence
The Wrangler JK receiver fits over the rear bumper beam and uses four high-strength through-bolts across the crossmember. The installation does not require drilling new mounting locations, but some factory holes must be enlarged slightly so the bolts pass squarely through the hitch and crossmember.
1. Lowering and Supporting the Rear Exhaust
The muffler is released from its rubber hanger and supported below the bumper beam. This creates room to slide the hitch into position without levering against the exhaust or stretching the remaining hangers.
2. Positioning the Hitch over the Bumper Beam
The receiver is placed over the crossmember and centered on the existing mounting holes. Some Wranglers have a factory bracket with welded nuts at this location; on those vehicles, the hitch slides between that bracket and the mounting tube before the factory hardware is reinstalled.
3. Correcting the Factory Hole Size When Required
The four crossmember holes are checked before the bolts are inserted. If a hole is undersized or misaligned, it is enlarged only to the specified diameter so the fastener passes straight through. This prevents damaged threads, angled hardware, or a receiver that is pulled out of alignment while tightening.
4. Installing the Grade-Eight Through-Bolts
Four half-inch bolts and flat washers pass through the hitch and bumper beam. The serrated flange nuts are installed on the exterior side, where they can seat against the hitch plates and remain accessible for torque verification.
5. Torquing the Crossmember Hardware
The hitch is held square to the bumper while the fasteners are tightened evenly. All four half-inch bolts are then torqued to 110 lb-ft before the exhaust is returned to its rubber hanger.
6. Final Receiver and Spare-Tire Clearance Check
We inspect receiver centering, safety-chain access, bumper clearance, exhaust clearance, spare-tire clearance, and room for the planned accessory. The finished cross tube remains tight to the bumper rather than hanging below the Jeep’s rear structure.
