2022–Present Acura MDX Flat-4 Wiring Installation
Output: Flat-4 trailer-light connector
System: Fuse-protected passive powered converter
Connection method: Vehicle light signals are identified and connected without adding an active vehicle-network module
Final connector location: Stored inside the rear cargo area when not in use; routed out beneath the hatch only while towing
Testing: Running lights, brake lights, left turn, right turn, and ground integrity are verified before reassembly
The current MDX uses a powered converter so the trailer lights receive their own fuse-protected supply instead of drawing trailer current through the vehicle’s lamp circuits. The system remains independent of Acura’s active towing electronics and can be function-tested before the cargo trim is restored.
1. Protecting the Vehicle and Identifying the Rear-Light Circuits
The battery is isolated and the necessary cargo trim is opened to reach the rear lighting wiring. Each required stop, turn, and running-light signal is confirmed at the vehicle harness rather than selected by wire color alone.
2. Mounting the Passive Converter
The converter is secured on a clean, protected surface inside the cargo area where it will not interfere with trim, stored equipment, or the spare-tire system. A dependable chassis ground is established at clean structural metal.
3. Routing the Fuse-Protected Power Lead
A dedicated power wire is routed from the converter to the battery. The path is kept away from exhaust heat, steering and suspension movement, sharp edges, and pinch points. The battery connection is completed through the specified fuse holder only after the rear work is complete.
4. Finishing the Interior Flat-4
The flat-4 lead is left inside the rear cargo area, rolled and secured when not in use. For towing, it is routed across the rear threshold and out beneath the hatch seal, clear of the latch. The weather seal compresses around the flat cable without requiring a permanent exterior opening.
5. Testing Before Reassembly
Running lights, brake lights, left turn, right turn, and ground integrity are tested at the flat-4. Only after every output passes are the cargo panels, storage floor, battery connection, and retained hardware restored.
