BMW X3 (2018–2024) Trailer Wiring Installation

This BMW X3 passive wiring system integrates a protected control module with the vehicle’s lighting circuits, rear 12-volt battery supply, and chassis ground. Cargo trim is removed, the harness is routed through a factory grommet, and a properly wired 7-way connector is mounted at the hitch. All lighting, power, ground, and available brake-output functions are tested before reassembly.
Installation Time: Typically up to 3 additional hours

1. Accessing the Cargo, Battery, and Taillight Circuits
Cargo floor panels, threshold trim, battery covers, anchors, and the necessary rear side panels are removed or loosened to reach the taillight circuits, protected module location, and the vehicle’s rear 12-volt battery system.

2. Mounting the Module and Routing Through the Factory Grommet
The passive-wiring control module is mounted inside the cargo area in a protected location. Its output harness is routed through a factory rear grommet and secured beneath the vehicle toward the Stealth Hitch frame and connector position.

3. Verifying and Connecting the Passive Lighting Signals
The appropriate left-turn, right-turn, running-light, and brake-light circuits are verified for the specific X3 before the module inputs are connected. This matters because BMW wire colors and configurations can vary by model and trim.

4. Connecting Ground and the Correct 12-Volt Power Source
The module ground is secured to a suitable vehicle grounding point, and its power lead is connected only to the correct rear 12-volt battery terminal. Any higher-voltage vehicle components are identified and left untouched.

5. Assembling, Mounting, and Testing the 7-Way Connector
The 7-way receptacle is assembled in the correct terminal configuration, mounted to the Stealth Hitch frame, and tested for running lights, brake lights, both turn signals, ground, 12-volt power, and available brake output. Wiring and trim are then secured and reassembled, with the included 7-way-to-4-flat adapter ready for smaller trailers and accessories.
