1. Opening the Rear Cargo Area
The rear hatch is opened and the cargo floor coverings, storage trays, and related fasteners are removed carefully.
This provides clean access to the factory trailer-wiring connection without disturbing the exterior taillights.

2. Locating the Factory Connector
The vehicle’s factory trailer-wiring connector is located behind the driver-side rear cargo trim.
Using this built-in connection avoids routing a separate power wire from the front battery.

3. Connecting the Vehicle-Specific Harness
A Forester-specific trailer-wiring harness is connected directly to the factory plug.
The plug-in design keeps the installation cleaner and less invasive than systems that require tapping into both taillight circuits.

4. Securing the Converter and Ground
The converter module is mounted inside the vehicle in a protected location near the rear cargo trim.
The harness is grounded to a clean, secure point on the vehicle body and the wiring is secured away from moving or sharp components.

5. Protected 4-Flat Storage
The 4-flat trailer connector is stored inside the rear cargo area when it is not in use.
Interior storage helps protect the connector from moisture, road debris, and corrosion while keeping it readily available for towing.

6. Circuit Testing and Reassembly
The system is tested for proper running lights, brake lights, left and right turn signals, and a reliable ground circuit.
The cargo trays, floor coverings, and trim pieces are then reinstalled, and the 4-flat dust cover is fitted for storage.
