Subaru Crosstrek (2013–Present) Trailer Wiring Installation

The Crosstrek includes a factory trailer connector behind the driver-side cargo trim. Cargo flooring and trays are removed, a vehicle-specific harness and converter are connected and grounded, and the 4-flat stores inside the vehicle for protection. Lighting and ground circuits are tested before reassembly.
Installation Time: Up to 30 additional minutes

1. Opening the Rear Cargo Area
The rear hatch is opened and the cargo floor coverings, storage trays, and related fasteners are removed carefully.
This provides access to the driver-side rear cargo trim without removing the exterior taillights.

2. Accessing the Factory Wiring Connector
The rear trim panels are loosened so the Crosstrek’s factory taillight wiring connector can be reached behind the driver-side cargo trim.
Using this built-in connection avoids routing a separate power wire through the vehicle’s exterior.

3. Installing the Plug-and-Play Harness
A vehicle-specific trailer-wiring harness is connected directly to the factory connector.
Factory-style plugs allow the installation to be completed without cutting or splicing the Crosstrek’s original wiring.

4. Securing the Converter and Ground
The powered converter module is mounted inside the protected rear cargo area near the taillight wiring.
The harness is grounded to a clean metal point on the vehicle body to support reliable trailer-light operation and protect the factory electrical system.

5. Testing Every Lighting Circuit
The completed system is tested for running lights, brake lights, left and right turn signals, and ground-circuit integrity.
This confirms correct operation before the cargo-area components are reassembled.

6. Protected Storage and Reassembly
The 4-flat connector stores inside the rear cargo area when not in use, helping protect it from moisture, road debris, and corrosion.
For towing, the connector is routed through the rear hatch while avoiding the center metal latch. Cargo trays, floor coverings, trim panels, and fasteners are then carefully reinstalled.
